The first Miffy book was published in 1955. Miffy books have been translated into over 50 languages and more than 85 million copies have been sold worldwide. Dick Bruna retired in 2011. He died in 2017 at the age of 89.

The name Nijntje is derived from the Dutch word "(ko)nijntje", which means "little rabbit" and while her name makes sense in Dutch, for many people around the world it's hard to pronounce. Outside of the Netherlands she became known as Miffy, a name easier in most languages.
